I always get ads about Israel -- I guess because I'm part of anti-Israel groups on fb lol :P but anyway- I always click on the x by the actual ad and when they ask why I want it removed I say its offensive material. Makes me feel rather good about myself :P

Well, I had a thing for trolls..you know those little weird creatures with beady eyes and hair that stuck straight up and was all sorts of colors? Yeah, those,,I even had troll pillows! Hey I thought it was cool!

I'd prefer taking my kid to a real horseback riding session rather than to saddle up on a piece of mechanic
- it's amazing the magnitude of robotization that is taking place in our world today...

Belarus was part of the USSR back when I was a kid :) ;) The USSR disassembled into sovereign states only in 1991, so I had a full 5 years to enjoy it, plus after that (perestroyka) though each state was independent, they still pretty much functions like Soviet states with added food shortages and bureaucracy.

Darine, you used to live in the USSR? I didn't know that! You should write a post about that.

As for the sweets, can't really say that I've had an experience buying sweets here in Lebanon. Do you eat different sweets to celebrate Ramadan than normal? All I know is that I do love "7elo"! I'm going to bring back a truck load for my friends and family back home..

I will be fasting on Monday for the first time in my life, and then going to an Iftar afterwards.. ;)

Yeah and I have to agree,,I don't know how anyone could work in sweets shop or in a restaurant while they are fasting! It must be torture!

Safsouf is an oriental sweets institution! :D

I usually get Ramadan sweets early in the morning before I go to work
- beating the pre-iftar afternoon rush hour(s)

But you're absolutely right - although this behavior might be well-intentioned (i.e. people wanting to make their families happy by bringing them tasty sweets to enjoy after a long day of fasting), the amount of rudeness practiced in stores and the amount of excess seen on iftar tables is simply un-Islamic and completely beats the purpose of the Holy Month of Ramadan

Plus you don't need to buy a different kind of sweets every single day! JOKE!

Check out my related post on Ramadan: http://noteconnection.wordpress.com/2010/08/06/ramadan

Great post Darine! (as usual ;)

Ramadan Karim everybody!

-- Great post Gabriel!

I think calligraphy will remain to be an intrinsic part of "Ramadan graphics" - though it would be interesting to see it evolve and incorporate Latin text and more "Western" visual approaches...

I love how you described it all: "it promotes the Islamic world, the religion, the people as one group, one complex identity, one brand"

You might want to check out my recent post on Ramadan - "The Long-Awaited"
http://noteconnection.wordpress.com/2010/08/06/ramadan

And would love to take part in your ongoing collaboration to learn more about your knowledge of the "Islamic" brand :)

Agree with Mireille.. One way is to explore new areas around Lebanon. One cool place is the little beaches in Batroun.. Kind of hidden. Ask for "Chez Maggie" and enjoy the view :-)

Hope you cure your travel bug for *real* soon!
