Advertising Copycats have a New Face

The below is a campaign that was launched by AM Financials last summer (Summer 2010) and still running on their site and corporate materials. At the time it seemed to me too brilliant to be original, I raked my memory and did my research.

Am Financials Ad Campaign

You could fin the full overview of the original Yahoo Campaign launched in September 2009 here.  I do not believe it was a coincidence, do you?

To be quite honest, I don’t think that this was another copycat incident. The world is all about personalization these days, and marketers and advertisers have realized that. Of all the campaigns that are running all year long, I think we are bound to run into a few that may sound or look a bit similar.

And personally, I like the AM Financials copy much more than the Yahoo copy..it flows better and makes more sense!

I have been pondering over the same question for a long time as well, I can not say I am 100% sure, but still I feel the balance is tilting towards the verdict that it was an influenced campaign. But then again, my feelings may as well be off :)

For some reason part of me understands this might be a copy issue but some other part seems it makes sense. And I agree with Dani, we are bound to run into a few that may sound or look similar.
I’ve noticed several of the campaigns from Impact BBDO Beirut have been caught as copies by Joe La Pompe, here’s an example: http://www.joelapompe.net/2011/02/08/rotating-scrolling-billboard-ford-audi-q7/

Anyhow, I also like the AM Financials copy too.

I guess it is a copycat incident indeed!

The argument that AM financials were only using the approach of personalization currently popular in businesses would’ve been valid if not for the wording of the ads. The use of ‘YOURS’, as a statement of personalization, in both campaigns is almost identical.

Not a coincidence from where I see it!!
